The Mexican-American Bar Association of Texas Foundation’s 19th annual Scholarship Luncheon took place August 21, 2024, at the C. Baldwin Curio Collection by Hilton. Scholarships are awarded to outstanding law students from each of the three Houston-based law schools who “exemplify leadership, commitment, justice, and equality within the Hispanic community and beyond.”

“It is important that we encourage a new generation of lawyers to not only be great in their profession but also give back to the legal community,” Benny Agosto Jr., president of the MABATx Foundation, said in a press release.

The Scholarship Luncheon also honored distinguished pioneers in the community:

  • Judge Pamela Medina, of Probate Court No. 2 in Harris County—Outstanding Service in the Community as Member of the Judiciary
  • Chef Hugo Ortega—Outstanding Service in the Community as a Business Executive
  • Jennifer Reyna, of KHOU Channel 11—Outstanding Service in the Community as a Pioneer in the Media Industry
  • Aramando Walle, of the 140th District—Outstanding Service in the Community as a Public Servant
  • Chief Sam Pena, previously with the Houston Fire Department—Lifetime Achievement Award
