The State Bar of Texas will host a CLE webinar titled “An SBOT Focus on Diversity Listening Session” from noon to 1:15 p.m. CDT October 28.
In this moderated panel discussion, Texas lawyers and bar leaders will discuss the impact of systemic racism and recent events on the legal community; the role of the State Bar of Texas, including limitations on bar activity under state law and federal court decisions; and the responsibility of lawyers as advocates and officers of the court.
The session is accredited for 0.5 hour of MCLE credit (including 0.5 hour ethics). Register here.
Controversial comments published by State Bar President Larry McDougal set off discussions and debates across Texas and throughout the legal community about issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion, in the midst of national discussions about race and equal justice. The State Bar of Texas Board of Directors began to respond by holding two special-called board meetings and forming work groups to pursue potential new diversity initiatives. This CLE discussion will answer the question: What is to come next?
Speakers include:
- Dominique D. Calhoun, Houston
- Ouisa D. Davis, El Paso
- Rudolph K. “Rudy” Metayer, Austin
- Alan E. Sims, Cedar Hill
- Lisa M. Tatum (moderator), San Antonio
The panelists will accept questions submitted in advance at questions@texasbar.com or by filling in the “Questions & Comments” tab in the webinar registration link. Questions may be submitted during the webinar using the Zoom Q&A feature. Panelists will answer questions during the webinar as time permits.
