The Dallas Volunteer Attorney Program is holding a weeklong pro bono celebration with several continuing legal education classes, a free volunteer legal clinic, and other events.

National Celebrate Pro Bono Week runs Oct. 23-29. The Dallas events are part of an effort to meet the ever-growing needs of the country’s most vulnerable citizens by encouraging and supporting local efforts to expand pro bono legal services.

A Pro Bono Awards Reception, which salutes volunteers who give of their time and talents, will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Pavilion at the Belo Mansion, 2101 Ross Ave. in Dallas, the headquarters of the Dallas Bar Association. “Pro Bono Lawyer of the Year” and “Pro Bono Law Firm of the Year” will be among the awards given out.

A free legal clinic, open to all people needing advice or counsel on any legal topic, will run from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Belo Mansion.

The events are co-sponsored by numerous community organizations, including the J.L. Turner Legal Association and W.W. Caruth, Jr. Child Advocacy Clinic at Southern Methodist University, according to a news release about the events.

In the past 12 months, DVAP attorneys donated 13,446 hours of free legal aid to low-income people in the Dallas area. An additional 35,878 hours were donated through numerous other pro bono organizations, according to the release.
