The 2016 Champions of Justice Gala Benefitting Veterans raised more than $334,000 to help provide civil legal services to low-income Texan veterans, the Texas Access to Justice Commission reported.

The seventh annual gala, held Wednesday, has raised nearly $2.5 million since its inception. The State Bar of Texas underwrites the event to ensure that proceeds go to helping veterans get legal assistance.

Highlights of the 2016 gala included a keynote presentation by General Peter Pace, a former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and a tribute to the late Houston attorney Joe Jamail by Texas Supreme Court Chief Justice Nathan Hecht. Bronwyn Blake, legal director with the Texas Advocacy Project, accepted the James B. Sales Boots on the Ground award for her work with domestic violence survivors.
