University of Houston Law Center Dean Raymond T. Nimmer has resigned after successfully guiding the law school for the past seven years. Nimmer will take a one-year sabbatical during the next academic year and then return to the classroom. Associate Dean Richard M. Alderman will serve as interim dean during the national search for a new dean.
University of Houston Law Center Dean Raymond T. Nimmer has resigned after successfully guiding the law school for the past seven years. Nimmer will take a one-year sabbatical during the next academic year and then return to the classroom. Associate Dean Richard M. Alderman will serve as interim dean during the national search for a new dean.
Nimmer spoke to faculty and staff yesterday noting that it has been a pleasure to serve as dean, but he firmly believes deans should not serve for an extended period of timeand that he is somewhat surprised by the length of his own tenure. He said his reasons for leaving include concerns about his health and his belief that the Law Center has essentially achieved all the goals he set despite challenging financial times. He cited increased faculty, revised curricula, improved ranking, international outreach, a tripling of scholarship funds, and a revitalized alumni organization.
Nimmer, who earned his B.A. and J.D. from Valparaiso University in Indiana, joined the faculty in 1975. He served as associate dean from 1978 to 1985, acting dean from 1993 to 1995, and was named dean in 2006. Over the years, he taught Contracts, Internet Law, Electronic Commerce, Bankruptcy, Secured Financing Law, Copyright Law, Information Law, Sales, Contract Drafting, and Licensing Law.
He is the author of more than 25 books and innumerable articles. He is a member of the American Law Institute, the Texas Bar Foundation, and the American College of Commercial Finance Attorneys, and a frequent speaker at programs in the U.S. and abroad in the areas of intellectual property, business and technology law. He is named among the Best Lawyers in America in Intellectual Property Law and in Information Technology Law as well as numerous "Who’s Who" listings.
Nimmer has been a consultant to the National Science Foundation and the Office of the Legal Advisor of the U.S. State Department and a Fulbright Distinguished Chair of International Commercial Law. In addition to his duties at the Law Center, Nimmer is also a Distinguished Chair in Residence at Universidad Catolica in Lisbon, Portugal.
