Random Profile: Elizabeth Rivers, Houston

Elizabeth RiversFor Random Profiles, we randomly pick one of our 92,000-plus attorneys and do a Q&A. We've found that every Texas lawyer has an interesting story. Will yours be next?

Favorite food: It’s a toss-up between lobster and snow cones.

Hobbies: Gardening, but without a green thumb. What I do might better be described as slowly killing plants.

If I had more time, I would: Flip houses.

Favorite saying/quote: A recent favorite: “Let’s eat grandma. Let’s eat, grandma. Commas save lives.”

Best thing about being a lawyer: The law is constantly evolving, so there is always something new to learn. And if you don’t like what you learn, you have the opportunity to argue different interpretations, new applications, or outright change. That keeps life interesting.

Family: My husband, Brian, is a physician assistant in surgical oncology at M.D. Anderson.

Areas of practice: My focus is civil appellate law.

Education: J.D., Washington University School of Law (2008) cum laude; B.A., University Scholars, Baylor University (2005) magna cum laude.

Who would you want playing you in a movie? Scarlett Johansson.

Last book you read: Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand.

Favorite restaurant: Mark’s American Cuisine.

Favorite sport: Football!

The last movie I saw: The World’s End.

Favorite TV program: Major Crimes.

Bet you didn’t know: I grew up with horses and showed Appaloosas through high school.

Another little known fact: I started buying rental properties in college.

What do you think is the biggest challenge facing attorneys today? Gaining trial experience.

If you weren't an attorney, what profession do you think you would be in? Probably accounting. I’m sure taxpayers are thrilled that I chose the legal route.

What has changed the most technologically or practice wise since you have been licensed? E-filing, bookmarking, and most recently hyperlinking appellate briefs.

Elizabeth is an associate at Wright & Close LLP in Houston.
