Random Profile: Martina Meritz, San Antonio

For Random Profiles, we randomly pick one of our 92,000-plus attorneys and do a Q&A. We've found that every Texas lawyer has an interesting story. Will yours be next?

Most important career lesson: Take everything in stride.

The part of my job I do best is: Negotiations. I like to find creative ways to come up with settlement strategies.

Who is your favorite on-screen or literary attorney, and why? Atticus Finch…He was the essence of a great human being.

Born/Age: January 21, 1977; 36

Family: I am married with a 4 year old son and a 6 month old daughter.

Areas of practice: Civil Defense/Insurance Defense

Education: I went to Trinity University for my undergraduate studies. I then went to Washington, D.C. for law school at Catholic University.

Bet you didn’t know: I am half Russian, one quarter Mexican, and one-quarter German.

Another little known fact: I was raised with a Jewish father and a Catholic mother. During holidays we had a Christmas tree and a Menorah.

Likes: I love to play tennis. I played in college and continue to play in adult leagues as much as possible.

Culinary talent: Sadly…ordering take out. My cooking skills are very much lacking.

Mentors/heroes: Thurgood Marshall, FDR, Nelson Mandela, and of course my mommy.

Favorite saying/quote: “I have seen war. I have seen war on land and sea. I have seen blood running from the wounded. I have seen men coughing out their gassed lungs. I have seen the dead in the mud. I have seen cities destroyed. I have seen 200 limping, exhausted men come out of line—the survivors of a regiment of 1,000 that went forward 48 hours before. I have seen children starving. I have seen the agony of mothers and wives. I hate war.”
― Franklin D. Roosevelt

Favorite plays: I am a cheesy musical lover. My favorites include Evita, Rent, and Wicked.

Favorite music/musician: Pink

Favorite movie: American History X, Lincoln, and Ordinary People

Favorite sport: Tennis

Favorite food: Anything sweet. Unfortunately I love sugar.

If I had more time, I would: Travel

If you could be anyone else for a day, who would it be? A Supreme Court Judge

If you weren't an attorney, what profession do you think you would be in? College Professor
