State Bar of Texas Blog

Random Profile: Terry Schpok, Dallas

For Random Profiles, we randomly pick one of our 87,000-plus attorneys and do a Q&A. We've found that every Texas lawyer has an interesting story. Will yours be next?

Best thing about being a lawyer:
Meeting people, as clients, who become long-term friends long after the conclusion of their initial legal matter.

Talents (besides law):
I can play the banjo like Steve Martin.  I played the banjo and mandolin with a bluegrass group and guitar with a jazz group.

Areas of practice:
Corporate law, including mergers and acquisitions, securities and financing transactions for private and public corporations.

The part of my job I do best is:
Finding legal and business solutions to client’s problems ranging from structuring and negotiating transactions to finding capital and personnel to accomplish a client’s business objectives.

Community involvement:
• Board member and General Counsel to the Dallas Film Society, Inc. which hosts the Dallas International Film Festival
• Chair, Sammons Center Endowment Corp., an endowment fund supporting the Sammons Center for the Arts
• Chair, BYO Musicians Network, Inc., a non-profit organization providing cost-free musical entertainment for charity events.

Bet you didn’t know:
I used to fly airplanes and have won flying contests.

When they do the film about you, what actor should portray you?
Leonard Nimoy in his younger days.

Favorite music/musician:
DJanjo Rheinhardt and the Hot Club of Paris.

Favorite saying/quote:
“Failing to plan is planning to fail.”

If I had more time, I would:
Learn more music and spend more time in the recording studio.

Terry works at Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP in Dallas.
